The Grand Mosque of Diyarbakır was built in the late 11th century by the Seljuk sultan Malik-Shah I over an older place of worship. Its layout is often compared with the Great Mosque of Damascus, which inspired its design.
The façades around its broad courtyard combine columns and carvings from different eras, revealing the city's many layers of history. It can hold up to 5,000 worshippers and is still an active mosque today.
